September 30, 1944 - July 13, 2025

Lt. Colonel Anthony Van Ellington

Lt. Colonel Anthony Van Ellington of Savannah, GA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 81, after a long illness.  The long-time resident of Georgia graduated from Jenkins High School and then earned his BS from Georgia Southern College.  Upon graduation, Van completed pilot training in Texas and, as a member of the United States Air Force, flew C-130 transport aircraft while stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam War.  He was joined in the Philippines by his wife Judy where they welcomed their only child, Anthony Slade Ellington.  They traveled to several locations while serving in the military later transitioning to both the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserves, retiring after 22 years of distinguished service as a Lieutenant Colonel.

After his military career, Van transitioned into business, taking over the long-time family store and developing 2 subdivisions.  It was also during this time that Van became a valued member of the Meals on Wheels charity, delivering meals to homebound seniors.  In his later years, Van and Judy retired to The Landings at Skidaway Island, where he indulged his love of golf, joining several golfing groups and forming many friendships, earning an impressive 6 holes in one. It was also during this time that 2 dogs found Van, earning him the nickname, “The Dog Whisperer.”  These dogs were his riding companions during his morning trips for coffee and a biscuit.

Van is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy Buie Ellington, his son Anthony Slade Ellington and Slade’s companion Beth Strabo, his sister Jill Ellington, his sister-in-law Ellen Ramage Ellington, the widow of his late brother Chris Ellington, and his sister-in-law Jenny Buie Loadholt and her husband Ernie Loadholt.  He is also survived by his nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who he loved and with whom he enjoyed spending time.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank all the compassionate caregivers and family members who contributed to Van’s care over the last year.  There will be a Celebration of Van’s life on Oct. 5 at 2:00 pm, at Delegal Creek Marina, 1 Marina Dr, The Landings, Skidaway Island, Savannah, GA 31411.
